The Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Flensburg, Kiel and Lübeck are the self-governing body of the business community in Schleswig-Holstein representing the general interest of its member companies.
In Germany, chambers of commerce and industry are public corporations with compulsory membership. According to the German Law on Chambers of Industry and Commerce their tasks are – among others:
- competent representation of industry, commerce and service companies in respect of state and society
- supply of services relating to business
- efficient performance of mandatory tasks
- objective advice for public decision makers
Besides, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry Schleswig-Holstein are the mediator between companies on one hand and regional parliament, government and administration on the other. Keeping contact to local, regional, national and supranational institutions the Chamber exerts influence on all these levels. The Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Schleswig-Holstein support and interact with the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) in Berlin and Brussels, the umbrella organization of all 81 German chambers of commerce and industry.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Schleswig-Holstein advocate a legal framework and business climate to grant the business community entrepreneurial independence. The Chambers are usually asked by municipalities, counties and the local governments to work out expert opinions on various issues, such as economic matters, spatial planning projects and many others. Yet the Chambers also provide statements and suggestions without being asked to work out an expert opinion - to the benefit of its member companies.
In brief: the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Flensburg, Kiel and Lübeck are a modern, customer-oriented institution providing companies and the public with a wide range of products and services. It also carries out mandatory tasks transferred to the chambers by law.
